The elephants were livelier this visit. I think they are looking forward to their new digs. Their current enclosure is tiny for 2 elephants, and their new one looks more "natural", with more grass & trees.
The turtles were in fine form as well. In fact, they were racing all over the place (okay, slow & steady racing).
One meerkat kept lying in the sun like he was exhausted. It was a little creepy, since it looks like he's dead instead of napping.
I was sad to see the sign that said Bobbles had been put down. The previous signs always said that he was "special" but that his wobbling and hobbling wasn't a problem for him. I will miss Bobbles... he was one of the highlights of my zoo visits.
Here's a pic of the infamous Gharial that we have sponsored through our zoo membership. The guy with the open mouth never moved... I'm not sure if he was asleep with his mouth open, or just hoping a bird would land inside if he kept still just a little longer.
"You monsters are all alike. You march in here like you own the place and start redecorating." Really Really Big Man

Honolulu Zoo
We went to the zoo today and joined the Honolulu Zoo Society (HZS). We are now proud Gharial Supporters! Unfortunately, I didn't get a picture of the reptile that we so lovingly forked over money for... so I will have to have an entire post dedicated to him the next time :{
Instead, I give you the acrobatic White-handed Gibbon, the always adorable Ring Tailed Lemur,
lazin' Black and White Ruffed Lemurs,
an up close and personal underwater turtle,
the camera shy Siamang Gibbons,
the peacock (AKA my Lunch Buddy),
Meerkats (reminding me of when all my children were still at home),
a sleepy chimpanzee,
a frisky lion, and an irritated lioness,
an even friskier lion, and a resigned lioness
reticulated ruminant giraffes,
"river horses", or hippos - holding their breath and snoozing
Next time --- the infamous Gharial crocodile!

Oahu in July
Our trip to Waikiki and the North Shore got off to an exciting start, as you can tell by this non-stop thrill ride to the Aloha Stadium Swap Meet
Next, I drug the boy to the zoo
Where he got in a stare-off with another primate
Guess who lost?
This rhino picture was taken just before the infamous "pee pit" incident...
My favorite animal in the zoo on the right... Bobbles the "special" meerkat
Mr. Chimp, uh, you have a little broccoli stuck in your teeth
Ooh... what's that?
That petting zoo pony is making me drool
If that elephant puts his tail on his bum... RUN!
